*HUGS* ... I read this post after seeing it all blocked out. Try fabric softener or dimethicone they sometimes help lace stitch definition.
i've done the same thing. mine was so bad i had to throw it out. thankfully it was just yarn that wasn't knit up yet, but i was NOT happy about it.
